How to read the map

Each pin marks a notable volcano, colored by its volcano type. Use the buttons above to show or hide types — for example, isolate the purple calderas to see the locations of potential large eruptions, or the red stratovolcanoes that dominate subduction zones. Zoom in and clusters split into individual volcanoes; click any pin for details.

Why volcanoes cluster where they do

Notice how pins concentrate around the rim of the Pacific. About 75% of the world's active volcanoes sit on the Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide at subduction zones. Mid-plate chains like Hawaii sit over hotspots instead, while Iceland straddles a mid-ocean ridge. Understanding these settings explains the whole map.
